Chapter 16
The next day, the clan from Boston woke to James OâBrienâs famous pancake breakfast. Emlen had heard about his Sunday morning pancake feasts but didnât remember them herself. He only did them on Sundays, but today was a special case because it was Joelâs memorial. Glancing over, Em saw that Eliseâs bed was already made, so she got up, made up her bed and headed for the shower.
Scatha was sitting on the back of a chair when she came out, twisting her hair up into a ponytail. âMorning, Scatha,â she said, laying out her clothes for the service later. Black slacks, a violet silk blouse and flats, since they were going to be out on the water.
~Good morning, Emlen. In the early hours, Jase came by, parking by your old place, then walking over. He met Gina down by the path to the beach and they spoke briefly before he departed. Gina went back into the trailer. I could not get close enough to listen. When I flew near, Jase drew his gun, so I left.~
âSo, he knows about you. Thatâs interesting,â Emlen mumbled as she pulled the chain with the Brewster ring on over her head and fastened the sapphire bracelet around her wrist.
~I think it would be wise to be suspect of Garda Jase. It looks like heâs pressuring Garda Gina.~
âWell, heâs at the B&B with Liam, so we can track things with him more later. For now? I want pancakes. How about you?â
~Save me one. Iâm going to keep an eye on things outside.~
âIâll do that,â Emlen told him as she headed downstairs.

Cullen wrapped his arms around Em as she hit the bottom of the stairs, swinging her off her feet before kissing her. âGood morning. There are pancakes, blueberries, syrup, bacon, sausage, and enough coffee to float a houseboat.â
âSounds amazing. Iâm starving,â Em told him, kissing him back. âYouâve told me about these pancake feasts, now I get to experience one for myself.â
âBest hurry up or itâll all be gone,â Cullen teased as he put her down, took her hand, and led her into the dining room. Everyone was seated at the table except for James who stood at the counter with a giant electric griddle. Gina came in and took a seat as Kian got up and headed out to take his shift. Em found a spot between Eileen and Cullen, accepting the mug of coffee handed to her by Connor with a âThanks.â Before sheâd even managed two sips, Eileen had picked up Emâs plate and was stacking blueberry pancakes, bacon strips, and breakfast sausage on it.
âOh, Ma, Iâm not going to be able to eat all of that,â Emlen laughed.
âWell, you can sure try,â Eileen told her, putting the plate in front of Emlen, then passing her the pitcher of warm syrup. âYouâre too skinny, Emmy. All that running and training is great, but you need to eat to fuel your body.â Eileen leaned over then and spoke near her ear.
